Desmond Jones, one of the originators of Physical Theatre, and the Founder and Director of the longest-running School of
Mime and Physical Theatre in Britain, closed his School in August 2004. After 25 very successful years he is now working
as an independent teacher, choreographer and director.
The School’s track record was long and impressive, encompassing everything from straight theatre to street theatre,
from documentaries on body language to major feature films. Ex-pupils have performed with all the main Mime and
Physical Theatre groups such as THEATRE DE COMPLICITE, THE RIGHT SIZE, TRESTLE, THE DAVID GLASS ENSEMBLE, OPHABOOM
and in films from GREYSTOKE to STAR WARS.
Desmond Jones was Movement Director on two Hollywood epics, and Advisor on the controversial THE LOVER (Dir. J-J Annaud).
His career started in cabaret, revue and film with the genius of PETER COOK and JOHN CLEESE, and after two years in Paris
with the great Mime teacher ETIENNE DECROUX, he also studied with JACQUES LECOQ. In London he worked with KEITH JOHNSTONE,
the guru of modern verbal improvisation and acting techniques, and performed with his legendary improvisation group,
THEATRE MACHINE. He has been MOVEMENT ADVISOR to the National Theatre and Opera Buffa, and has choreographed for films
and television as well as the Royal Ballet and the English National Opera. His long acting career also embraces the stage,
television and films.
His current guest teaching schedule is broad and diverse, from major Drama Colleges across London and beyond,
to Masterclasses in Colombia, Bogota. As an expert on the analysis of movement and body language, he teaches and
lectures widely at Universities, Colleges of Art and Business Institutions both national and international.
